Day 26 Audience Research

As a group we decided to use Survey Monkey; an online survey development company to collect our audience research.  We used the programme to create surveys which we gave to 15 people to complete after watching our short film.

Out of the 15 people we asked this chart shows how many females and how many males completed the survey. This was useful as we could recognise trends based on gender.

We asked this question to get a general idea of what type of age group our target audience was or what age group our film appealed to the most.

We listed three categories and found that the most common age group was 21+ with 40% of the responses, this told us that our film did appeal to a older audience which we had anticipated and ideally wanted.

46% of people we asked described our film as 'good' and 40%  said 'brilliant'. This established to us that our short film was successfull as the majority of our audience enjoyed watching it and considered it a good film. However around 13% of people who watched Day 26 and answered our survey, only described our film as 'ok', this made us aware that there was still room for improvement within our film. Although it could also suggest that our film only appeals to a particular type of audience.

This was one of our most important questions that we asked in our survey as we really wanted the audience to recognise the significant codes and conventions of the genre we incorporated in the short film. This was because we wanted them to identify these clues to what the genre of our film was. Looking at the respondent's answers the overall majority did connect our film with the genre drama or a sub-genre in drama films.

100% of the people we aked answered 'yes', to whether they like the acting by Annagh Drake in Day 26. Making sure we had amazing acting was one of the most important things we thought about during our research and planning stages. The acting was important as we had no dialouge throughout our film, therefore we had to ensure we chose an actor who we knew had the ability to portray emotion through the mise-en-scene of facial expressions and body language.

We asked this question to find out whether the audience saw the deeping meaning to our short film or even if they related on a personal or emotional level. In our results, we found that the majority did see that the moral of our film was about 'not letting go' and 'holding on to the past', knowing this allowed us to see that our short film was being understood and that there was more that meets the eye when it came to 'Day 26'.

The results from this question showed us that our film was successful, the respondent's of our survey gave us positive ratings with the highest of 4/5 with 53.33% of votes. We were given all ratings over 3/5 and managed to get a 33.33% of 5/5 ratings. This again showed us that our film was recieved very well and may even do well in the film industry.

The results to this question gave us varied answers, we gave them a multiple choice answer and the majority of responses of 53.33% said they would watch a short film again with only 6.67% saying they wouldn't and the rest said they might watch a short film again.

This showed us that Day 26 did represent short films well.

To understand where we may have gone wrong or where there was room for imprvement within our short film we asked our audience "If you could change one thing about Day 26, what would it be?".

The picture on the left shows some of the responses that we recieved, such as:

  • including more dialogue

  • make the film longer

  • including more characters

  •

This was a useful piece of constructive criticism as, as a production company it made us aware of what we could do differently to cater for our audience in the future.

This was quite a similar question regarding genre, we wanted to know more about our audience and whether they could distinguish codes and coventions of drama films as these people would be our target audience for drama films and all respondents said 'Yes' they did think our fil displayed these codes and conventions.

We also decided to send out our survey on other medias, such as Whatsapp. Where me messaged some media students and asked them the same questions, this allowed us to get new responses and was also a much quicker, convinient and effective way to reach out to people as we had more of a chance of a reply.

We had three interviewees on whatsapp and they were all asked similar questions from our survey.

From these responses we found out that they all really enjoyed our short film and pointed out that we had a interesting storyline, a good amateur production and a realistic setting.

Furthermore, when asked "..would you say our film displayed more codes and conventions of a drama?" they answered "Definitely" & " Absolutely".

Overall we had a mixed ratings between 4-5, which showed us our film was a succes and recieved well.
