What makes a drama film?

  • The whole purpose is to have a dramatic storyline, which all films of a drama genre should have, it should move the audience emotionally. Drama films mainly focus on the development of realistic characters dealing with emotional issues, in most cases the films concentrate on normal character(s) that are dealing with a conflict or dilemma like our main character Annagh, who seems like an average girl but our short film would slowly uncover that there was more to her that what meets the eye; which drama films aim to focus on building up charcters that the audience enage with.

There are many different sub-genres to Drama films, such as:

  • Crime drama

  • Historical drama

  • Comedy drama

  • Melodrama

  • Romantic drama

  • Period piece

  • Pyschodram

Research on Genre

Looking at IMDb, these were some of the highest grossing films of this year and previous.

'Gone girl' in the US had a $106,762,231 profit in the first four months of it's release, just showing how well a drama film is recieved to it's audiences.

The importance of researching sub-genre, is that it gives us a greater understanding of the genre, which allows us to create a better production as we are aware of all the necessary codes and conventions that we need to include.
